Coated Fabrics
Coated fabrics are the backbone of modern industrial textiles: a base fabric — most commonly polyester — that is bonded with a polymer layer such as PVC, TPU, or TPO to combine the tensile strength of the weave with the sealing, weathering, and chemical resistance of the coating. The result is a family of materials that can be welded, printed, laminated, and formed into products ranging from truck covers to architectural facades.
How Coating Method Changes Performance
The same base fabric can behave very differently depending on how the coating is applied. Knife-coating forces polymer directly into the weave, producing a dense, well-bonded sheet with consistent thickness — the preferred route for tarpaulins, banners, and structural membranes. Lamination and calendering, by contrast, suit film-backed products where surface finish and gauge control matter most. Understanding this distinction is the fastest way to narrow a specification: when seam strength and long-term flexing are critical, knife-coated constructions generally hold up better.
Typical Applications Across Industries
Covers and shelters: truck side curtains, cargo tarps, warehouse dividers, temporary storage shelters.
Printing media: frontlit and backlit banner material for wide-format advertising.
Architecture: tensioned membrane roofs, facades, and shade structures.
Water management: pond liners, pool liners, and geomembranes for containment.
Industrial use: conveyor belt covers, ducting, inflatable structures, and protective sheeting.
What to Check Before You Buy
Four parameters do most of the work in a coated fabric specification. First, total weight (gsm), which correlates with durability but also affects handling and shipping cost. Second, base fabric construction — the denier and weave density of the polyester determines tear strength in both directions. Third, surface treatment: acrylic or PVDF lacquers improve dirt resistance and print life, while anti-mildew treatments matter in humid climates. Fourth, welding behaviour, because a fabric that seams poorly is a fabric that fails at the seam. Request a datasheet for each candidate and compare these four lines side by side before comparing price.
Kezhibo supplies coated fabrics across this entire spectrum, with knife-coating lines for structural and heavy-duty grades and custom manufacturing services for customers who need a specific weight, colour, or finish.
