Knife-Coated Fabric

Knife-coated fabric refers to coated textiles produced by the knife (or knife-over-roll) coating process, in which a blade meters liquid PVC or polymer directly onto the moving base fabric, pressing it into the weave. Compared with lamination, where a pre-made film is bonded to the surface, knife coating builds the coating inside the fabric structure — and that difference is the whole point: better penetration, stronger polymer-to-fibre bonding, and thickness controlled to fractions of a millimetre across the entire roll.
Why the Process Matters to the Buyer
The advantages show up exactly where products fail in service. Penetration bonds the coating to each yarn, so knife-coated material resists delamination when flexed, folded, or abraded. Metered application keeps coating weight uniform from selvedge to selvedge, which translates into even welding behaviour and consistent surface appearance — critical for printing and for tension structures. And because the process tolerates high-viscosity formulations, producers can build heavy, tough constructions in a single controlled pass.

Superior adhesion — coating interlocks with the weave rather than sitting on top of it.
Thickness uniformity — predictable welds and print surfaces across the roll.
Heavy constructions — high-weight tarpaulins and membranes achievable without lamination weak points.
Tunable surfaces — topcoat lacquers applied in the same line for gloss, matte, or print-optimized finishes.

Where Knife-Coated Fabric Is the Right Answer
Any application that welds, flexes, or lives outdoors benefits from the process: truck covers and tarpaulins, structural and architectural membranes, pool and pond liners, banner fabrics, and industrial sheeting. Where a project instead needs ultra-smooth film aesthetics at low weight, laminated products can still win — the two processes are complements, not competitors.
Kezhibo runs automated knife-coating production lines as a core capability, documented in our production news and audits under ISO 9001. That capacity lets us offer both standard grades and genuinely custom constructions — weight, colour, lacquer, and FR package — with the consistency that long-term outdoor products demand. Contact our team with your application; we are glad to recommend whether knife-coated or laminated construction serves you better.
