PVC Tarpaulin

PVC tarpaulin is a knife-coated polyester fabric finished with PVC on both faces, engineered for covers and structures that stay outdoors for months or years at a time. Unlike lightweight PE sheeting, a proper PVC tarpaulin welds cleanly, resists UV exposure without going brittle, and carries meaningful tensile and tear loads — which is why it dominates serious tarp applications worldwide.
Where PVC Tarpaulin Earns Its Keep
The classic uses are transport and containment: truck side curtains and covers, hay and grain covers, machinery protection, and temporary warehouses. Beyond transport, PVC tarpaulin shows up in event structures, tents, inflatable products, water tank fabric, and industrial curtain walls. In each case the deciding factors are the same — the fabric must survive flexing around edges and grommets, hold a weld under load, and keep water out through seasons of sun and rain.
Choosing a Grade
Weight is the first filter. Lighter grades (roughly in the 500–650 gsm band) suit curtains and moderate-duty covers where frequent handling matters; heavier grades go into truck covers, shelters, and any structure where wind load is a design factor. After weight, look at:

Tensile and tear strength (N/5cm) in warp and weft — these two numbers predict failure better than weight alone.
Surface finish: lacquered faces shed dirt and extend print life; matte faces reduce glare.
Cold crack rating, critical if the covers work through winters.
Fire retardancy — many markets require certified FR grades for public-facing structures, so confirm the standard your project references (for example DIN 4102 B1 or EN 13501).

Colour and blockout construction are the other common choices. Blockout tarpaulins sandwich a dark middle layer to prevent light transmission, useful for advertising and for covers where photosensitive cargo rides underneath.
