TPU / TPO Coated Fabric

TPU and TPO coated fabrics are the performance tier of polymer-coated textiles, answering the two questions PVC handles less well: extreme mechanical abuse and broad chemical or environmental exposure. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) brings outstanding abrasion resistance, elasticity, and low-temperature flexibility; thermoplastic olefin (TPO) brings strong weathering behaviour and wider chemical tolerance with a lighter environmental profile. Both bond to polyester or other base fabrics through coating or lamination.
TPU or TPO — Matching the Polymer to the Pain

Choose TPU when the failure mode is mechanical: abrasion, repeated flexing, impact, or cold-temperature service. Inflatables, high-cycle mechanical components, and demanding protective equipment live here.
Choose TPO when the failure mode is environmental: long UV exposure, ozone, or chemical contact where PVC plasticizers would migrate and PVC compounds would fatigue. Green construction and long-life exterior components suit it.
Stay with PVC when cost-performance on general outdoor duty is the priority — it remains the rational choice for a large share of covers and banners.

What to Verify in This Tier
Premium polymers raise the stakes on process quality: adhesion between coating and fabric, weld behaviour (TPU welds differently from PVC and needs matching equipment), and consistency across the roll all matter more because the application tolerated the higher price for a reason. Ask for adhesion values and welding guidance as part of the datasheet, not as an afterthought.
